London, UK – The British government announced today the addition of 11 new designations to its sanctions regime against Iran.
This move comes as London intensifies its efforts to counter what
it describes as Iranian activities that threaten regional and international security and stability.
The British Foreign Office said in a statement that the new designations
are part of the UK’s policy of holding accountable entities and individuals involved in destabilizing activities.
This includes supporting armed groups, human rights abuses,
or developing programs that pose a threat to international security.
The statement explained that the sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans.
In addition, there are financial and trade restrictions aimed at limiting
the ability of the designated entities to access the international financial system.
A key tool for political pressure
The British government confirmed that this step falls within the framework of UK sanctions laws.
It also affirmed that it is consistent with London’s international obligations,
noting that the sanctions regime remains a key tool for political
and diplomatic pressure to compel Tehran to comply with international law and de-escalate tensions.
The statement added that the United Kingdom will continue to review
and update the sanctions regime periodically,
in accordance with developments and the behavior attributed to Iranian entities.
It also affirmed its readiness to take further measures if necessary,
in coordination with allies and international partners.
Open diplomatic channels
This decision comes at a time of escalating tensions between Iran and several Western countries over
a range of issues, including security, regional matters, and human rights.
London believes that tightening sanctions sends a clear message
that violations or activities that undermine stability will not go unpunished.
The British government concluded by emphasizing that the sanctions are not intended to harm the Iranian people.
Rather, the aim is to direct pressure toward those responsible for the troubling policies and activities,
while keeping diplomatic channels open to address contentious issues through political means.
