Washington, DC – UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed grave concern Saturday over the sharp escalation of violence in Venezuela. This followed a US military operation that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who were subsequently taken out of the country.

Guterres said he is closely monitoring the situation. He stressed the need to avoid any steps that could escalate tensions and threaten regional stability. This comes as the capital, Caracas, is witnessing widespread protests by Maduro supporters. Meanwhile, Venezuela has closed its border with Brazil, according to the head of the Brazilian Federal Police.

US President Donald Trump announced that Maduro and his wife would be traveling to New York. He also confirmed that the possibility of Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado assuming leadership of a transitional phase was being considered. He further stated that US soldiers involved in the operation sustained injuries, but they were not serious. Additionally, he indicated that the US would be involved in Venezuela’s oil industry.

Cuba and Russia condemned the US operation, deeming it a blatant violation of Venezuelan sovereignty. Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that his country did not participate in the strikes, calling for restraint and respect for international law.

Meanwhile, the EU and NATO High Representative stressed the seriousness of the situation, calling for the protection of civilians and support for a democratic transition of power. The Brazilian president described the operation as an “unacceptable mistake,” while the Chilean president called for respect for international law. Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Machado stated that the days of the Maduro regime were numbered.
