Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) affirmed that the escalating threats targeting navigation in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait pose a direct challenge to regional and international security. The Council called upon the international community to adopt a firm stance and collective measures to ensure the security of one of the world’s most strategic maritime chokepoints.

In an official statement, the Council emphasized that the security of navigation in Bab el-Mandeb is a shared international responsibility, given the strait’s vital role in global trade and energy supply. Moreover, the Council also warned that any disruptions to this crucial waterway could have repercussions for the global economy and supply chains.

He emphasized that targeting commercial vessels or threatening freedom of navigation constitutes a clear violation of international law. He also called for enhanced international cooperation to protect maritime routes and deter any attempts to threaten the security of the Red Sea or affect the stability of the region.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) stressed the importance of intensifying political and security efforts to maintain the security of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Furthermore, it called for addressing the root causes of tension through dialogue and adherence to international law. This, in turn, would contribute to the enhancement of regional and international security and stability.

This stance comes amidst escalating concerns about the recurrence of attacks targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea. These attacks could lead to disruptions in international trade and increased shipping and insurance costs. Consequently, this situation is driving growing calls for coordinated international action to ensure the security of navigation and protect this vital maritime artery.
