Washington, America – In a move that reflects official appreciation for the sacrifices of the military, US President Donald Trump signed a legislative bill officially
allowing the establishment of a national memorial dedicated to Medal of Honor holders on the famous historic landmark “National Mall” in Washington, DC.
The bill was signed during an official visit by President Trump to the Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas.
Details of the legislation and the commemoration of Herschel “Woody” Williams
It is worth noting that the “Medal of Honor” is the highest and most prestigious military decoration in the United States of America.
Although strict regulations and the Monuments Act prohibit, in principle,
the erection of any new monuments or memorials in the sensitive heritage preservation area of the National Mall,
However, the new law approved a special legal exception for the museum institution
to circumvent this prohibition and erect the monument as a memorial to the heroism of the medal holders.
The legislative path of the bill had passed its final stages in Congress.
The Senate passed the text on March 25th, followed by the House of Representatives on March 31st.
It was then officially sent to President Trump’s office on the second of this month for him to sign and enact into law.
Law on the Location of the Herschel Monument
The bill was officially titled the “Hershil “Woody” Williams National Medal of Honor Memorial Site Designation Act.”
This name carries deep national symbolism, honoring the late military hero Hershil “Woody” Williams.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor in recognition of his distinguished
and heroic service in the famous Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
With his death in 2022, Williams represented the last surviving recipient of the Medal of Honor for that great war.
Therefore, this new monument was erected to commemorate him
and all the heroes who have received the highest American military honor throughout history.
