Dubai, UAE – Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei said on Thursday that what he called “political moves” by the International Atomic Energy Agency could push countries to withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
Rezaei’s remarks arrived a day after the IAEA Board of Governors passed a resolution notifying the UN Security Council that Iran has violated its non-proliferation obligations.
Iranian Criticism of International Atomic Energy Agency
The Iranian official criticized the IAEA’s course of action, arguing that the approach pursued in handling the Iranian nuclear file could have repercussions extending beyond the current dispute between Tehran and the agency.
Iranian officials maintain that political decisions and pressures associated with the nuclear program do not contribute to resolving outstanding issues, as Tehran insists on its right to peaceful nuclear energy use.
Referral of Board Resolution to UN Security Council
The IAEA Board of Governors adopted a resolution regarding Iran, which includes reporting Tehran’s non-compliance with its non-proliferation commitments to the UN Security Council.
The resolution comes amid persistent disagreements between Iran and the agency regarding cooperation levels and oversight of Iranian nuclear activities and facilities, alongside mounting international pressure on Tehran.
Iranian Warnings and Repercussions for Non-Proliferation
Rezaei warned that continuing what he termed political moves by the agency might compel nations to reconsider their commitments under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The treaty forms the primary international framework for curbing nuclear weapons spread, while Western powers fear escalating tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program could erode global non-proliferation efforts.
