The action marks the first direct operational downing of an intruding UAV over Romanian territory since the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Military officials stated that the air defense procedure was triggered after radar systems detected an unknown aerial target approaching the eastern border. NATO scrambled four combat aircraft: two Romanian F-16s from Fetești Air Base and two Italian Eurofighter Typhoons deployed at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan confirmed that the F-16 pilot engaged the drone over an unpopulated area near Padina village, approximately 114 kilometers from Bucharest, ensuring no civilian harm or infrastructure damage occurred.
