New Delhi, India – Talks bringing together senior Indian government officials and student movement leaders failed to make tangible progress toward ending the ongoing protest crisis.
Protesters insisted on the removal of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as a fundamental condition for any settlement, despite both sides agreeing to resume negotiations on Saturday.
Protesters Stand Firm on Demands
The government meeting lasted about two hours with Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh meeting youth movement representatives to discuss demands of thousands of camping students.
Movement spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka stated after the meeting that demonstrators will not back down from their primary demand for the minister’s resignation to reform education.
On the other hand, Minister J.P. Nadda explained that the government listened to all presented demands, noting it will submit formal responses and proposals in the next round.
Exam Scandals Spark Wide Protests
This intensifying crisis follows a week of demonstrations and clashes between students and security forces using batons and tear gas to disperse protesters near parliament.
The protests erupted following disclosures of major national exam scandals, most notably medical entrance exam leaks and electronic grading issues in high schools.
Observers fear the expansion of protests and continued student inflows to sit-in sites if the government fails to provide a radical settlement satisfying the demonstrators.
