Vienna, Austria – The UAE, represented by the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority, chaired the thirty-first meeting of the Office of the Steering Committee for Oversight Capacity Building of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Which was held at the agency’s headquarters in Austria.
The meeting was chaired by Shaima Al Mansouri, Director of the Education and Training Department at the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority and Chairman of the Steering Committee. With the participation of senior officials from regulatory bodies and the General Secretariat of the International Agency. To discuss efforts to develop the competencies and capabilities of workers in the nuclear and radiological sector.

The meeting discussed various programmes developed by the International Agency to assist regulatory authorities in assessing their competency needs. Identifying skills gaps and developing human capabilities.
Participants discussed ways to expand digital learning opportunities, enhance knowledge management, and employ artificial intelligence technologies to support training. Competency assessment and workforce planning.
The Bureau adopted the agenda for the 18th meeting of the Steering Committee, scheduled to be held later this year. He also agreed to extend the UAE’s chairmanship of the Steering Committee until 2027. This reflects continued international confidence in the UAE’s leadership role in enhancing global oversight capacity building.

In October 2024, the UAE was elected to chair the IAEA’s Oversight Capacity Building Steering Committee. Since then, it has contributed to supporting the development of the regulatory capabilities of regulatory bodies around the world.
The IAEA’s Steering Committee for Capacity Building is responsible for developing the strategy and roadmap for enhancing the competencies of regulatory bodies responsible for nuclear and radiation safety. It also supports member states by enhancing international cooperation and exchanging best practices. Developing programs and guidelines that enable entities to build independent, effective and sustainable institutions.
