Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed the head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Yevhen Khmara, as acting defense minister. This move comes amid ongoing restructuring of the security and military institutions in the context of the continuing conflict with Russia.
The decision is part of administrative changes aimed at strengthening coordination between security agencies and the military command. It also aims to ensure the continued efficient management of the Ministry of Defense during this period, which is witnessing an escalation of fighting on several fronts.
The Ukrainian presidency confirmed that Khmara will assume the responsibilities of the Ministry of Defense temporarily until a final decision is made regarding the permanent appointment. Meanwhile, work continues on plans to modernize the armed forces and strengthen their defense capabilities.
Observers believe that the selection of the head of the Security Service to serve as acting defense minister reflects the Ukrainian leadership’s desire to unify security and military efforts. This is particularly evident given the challenges the country faces on both the military and political fronts. Furthermore, Western military support for Kyiv continues.
