Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the appointment of Yevhen Khmara as acting defense minister, a move seen as part of a restructuring of state institutions and the military leadership amid the ongoing war with Russia. This step reflects Kyiv’s commitment to maintaining stability in the defense sector during this period.
Khamara is a prominent figure within the Ukrainian defense establishment, having held several executive and administrative positions that have given him extensive experience in managing the armed forces. He has also been involved in overseeing armament, logistical support, and coordination with Western partners – all of which have been top priorities for Ukraine since the outbreak of the war.
The Ukrainian official enjoys close working relationships with military leaders and has contributed in recent years to implementing programs aimed at modernizing the army and enhancing the efficiency of the defense system. He has also overseen the implementation of international military aid and ensured its delivery to combat units.
His appointment comes at a time when Ukraine faces escalating military challenges on the front lines. This coincides with ongoing Russian attacks and Kyiv’s efforts to bolster its defense capabilities and maintain Western support.
Khamara is expected to head the ministry temporarily until the appointment of a new defense minister is finalized. He will continue working on implementing military plans and coordinating with allies to ensure the continued provision of security and military support to Ukraine.
