Cairo, Egypt – The Arab League condemned Israel’s ongoing violations against Palestinian prisoners and detainees, expressing deep concern over what it described as a systematic policy targeting prisoners.
This came in the wake of the recent assault on Palestinian prisoner Marwan Barghouti inside Israeli prisons.
Holding Israel responsible
The university affirmed in a statement that these practices constitute
a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.
It also held the Israeli government fully responsible for the safety of Marwan Barghouti.
The university asserted that the treatment of Palestinian prisoners amounts to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
It called upon the international community to take action to stop these violations.
Calls for an urgent international investigation
The Arab League called for the formation of an urgent international commission of inquiry to investigate violations
against Palestinian prisoners and for Marwan Barghouti to be granted an independent medical examination.
It also demanded his transfer to a hospital if his health condition warranted it.
Furthermore, it called for an end to all forms of torture and ill-treatment in Israeli prisons.
In addition, it demanded that prisoners’ rights be respected in accordance with international law.
Call for the release of prisoners
The Arab League stressed the need to release Palestinian prisoners held for political reasons.
It also affirmed that the continued violations against them necessitate
a firm international stance to ensure their protection and hold those responsible accountable.
This must be done in accordance with the provisions of international humanitarian law and relevant international conventions.
