Tehran, Iran – The Iranian Foreign Ministry asserted that any demining operations in the Strait of Hormuz must be carried out solely by Iran, in accordance with the memorandum of understanding.
This statement came in response to French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that his country,
in cooperation with Oman and other partners, intends to work on demining the strait.
Iran adhered to the memorandum of understanding
The Iranian Foreign Ministry explained that the memorandum of understanding regulating the situation
in the Strait of Hormuz specifies the mechanisms for dealing with any field procedures within the sea corridor.
It also stressed that carrying out mine clearance operations remains Iran’s prerogative in accordance with these arrangements.
She added that Tehran views any steps outside this framework as a violation of existing understandings.
She stressed the need to adhere to what was agreed upon to maintain stability in the region.
France warned against escalation
The Iranian Foreign Ministry warned Paris against taking any positions or actions that could further complicate the situation.
It stressed that the current phase is extremely sensitive and requires careful and responsible handling.
The ministry stated that the regional situation cannot withstand further escalation.
It also called on France to avoid what it described as “provocations”
that could negatively impact efforts to maintain security and stability in maritime routes.
The importance of maintaining maritime security
The Iranian Foreign Ministry affirmed that the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is a priority.
However, it stressed that this security must be managed within the framework of existing understandings and agreements, and in a manner that respects the sovereignty of the countries involved.
The ministry emphasized that any actions related to the strait should be conducted through agreed-upon channels.
This contributes to avoiding escalation and maintaining regional stability.
It also stressed that international cooperation must be based on respect
for existing commitments and refraining from unilateral actions that could increase tensions.
