Rome, Italy – Several European countries are experiencing a severe heatwave as temperatures approach 40°C. At the same time, there are widespread warnings about the persistence of extreme weather conditions and their impact on daily life, transport, and infrastructure. Moreover, fears are growing that the phenomenon may extend longer than usual.
Official Warnings Across European Countries
Authorities in Italy issued red-level warnings in eight major cities, including Bologna, Florence, Milan, and Turin. Meanwhile, Spain raised its alert level to red and orange in multiple regions. Furthermore, there are expectations of temperatures exceeding the 39°C and 40°C mark across large parts of the country.
Direct Impacts on Transport and Infrastructure
The heatwave has caused tangible disruptions in the transport sector, especially in France. The railway authority announced that the network was affected by expanding tracks and threats to overhead power lines. Consequently, dozens of trips were cancelled and thousands of employees were mobilized to handle emergency breakdowns.
Hot Air Mass from the Sahara Desert
Meteorologists attribute this heatwave to the influx of an extremely hot air mass originating from the Sahara Desert heading towards the north of the continent. It is driven by the African anticyclone. As a result, this has contributed to an unusual rise in temperatures at the beginning of summer.
Growing Environmental and Health Concerns
Environmental and health authorities have warned of the heatwave’s repercussions on wildlife and public health. There have been cases of heat stress recorded among animals in some areas. In addition, experts point out that the recurrence of such heatwaves reflects the escalating impacts of climate change in Europe in recent years.
