Moscow, Russia – Russian authorities have accused Ukraine of systematic violations against civilians in conflict-affected areas, warning of an escalation in what they described as “serious crimes” targeting the population and civilian infrastructure. This comes amid ongoing military clashes between the two sides.
Russian officials stated that Ukrainian forces have recently carried out attacks targeting residential areas and civilian facilities within Russian territory and border regions. These attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and widespread damage to public and private property.
Moscow added that these attacks are not limited to military targets, but also extend to service facilities and vital infrastructure used by civilians. It asserted that the recurrence of such operations indicates a deliberate pattern aimed at influencing the population and inciting fear and instability.
Russian officials confirmed that the relevant authorities are working to document all facts and events related to the attacks on civilian areas. They also indicated that this documentation will be used in the legal and diplomatic actions that Moscow intends to take at the international level.
Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine have been exchanging accusations regarding the targeting of civilians since the outbreak of the war. Each side maintains that the other is responsible for the casualties and damage inflicted on residential areas and infrastructure.
This escalation in accusations coincides with the continuation of military operations on several fronts. This comes amidst stalled efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement to end the conflict, which has now lasted for more than four years. International concerns are also growing that the continued fighting will exacerbate the humanitarian crisis and increase the number of casualties and displaced persons.
Observers believe that the exchange of accusations between Moscow and Kyiv regarding the targeting of civilians reflects the escalating tension between the two sides. It further complicates the political and military landscape, at a time when international calls continue for independent investigations into all alleged violations and for those responsible to be held accountable under international law.
