Kuwait – Kuwaiti authorities announced the activation of a maximum emergency plan and the complete suspension of air traffic. This came after Terminal 1 at Kuwait International Airport was targeted by missile and drone attacks launched by Iranian forces.
Kuwait Civil Aviation Authority statement
In an official statement issued on Wednesday morning, June 4, the Kuwaiti General Authority of Civil Aviation confirmed the attack. It indicated that immediate measures should be taken to protect facilities and travelers. But it did not initially reveal further details about the nature of the projectiles or the exact extent of the potential damage.
For its part, the official Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported that the missile and drone attack resulted in injuries of varying severity to a number of people present at the site. As a result, all departing flights were suspended. Incoming flights were also diverted to alternative airports in neighboring countries. Technical and security authorities are currently implementing approved emergency plans to address such direct security threats.
Security alert and damage assessment at the airport
The activation of the airport’s emergency plan means placing all relevant agencies and departments, including civil defense, medical teams, and security systems, on high alert and operating around the clock.
This strategic plan aims to accurately assess the extent of structural damage. It also aims to ensure the safety of passengers and staff within the airport premises and to facilitate the resumption of vital airport operations as soon as the security situation stabilizes.
This shocking attack came after a night of intense missile and drone attacks launched by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps against Kuwait.
Kuwaiti military officials, in coordination with the US Central Command (CENTCOM), had previously announced that air defenses had successfully intercepted and destroyed several missile and drone attacks in the air. However, some managed to penetrate Kuwaiti airspace and strike a civilian passenger terminal.
As of yet, Kuwaiti authorities have not released further details regarding the final number of casualties or the extent of the direct material damage. Political and diplomatic measures in response to this dangerous regional escalation are still being anticipated.
