London, UK – The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced in an official statement a new security incident in territorial waters near the strategic Yemeni island of Socotra. This is a clear indication of the continued escalation of tensions and risks threatening international maritime traffic and energy tankers in the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea.
Suspicious approach to an oil tanker
The UK Maritime Safety Authority (UKMSA), which oversees the security of international waterways, reported receiving an urgent alert about a security incident approximately 200 nautical miles (370 kilometers) west of the Yemeni island of Socotra.
According to the agency’s report, a commercial tanker carrying petroleum products reported that a small boat carrying five unidentified individuals approached it at high speed. The boat also attempted to follow the tanker’s course in international waters in a suspicious manner.
The UKMTO report indicated that the small vessel approached dangerously close to within approximately 100 meters (328 feet) of the oil tanker. This prompted the crew to raise the alert level.
The suspicious boat only changed course and moved away from the vessel after the tanker’s armed security team deployed across the decks and demonstrated their readiness to deter any potential attack or piracy. The team then implemented standard defensive measures to prevent any possible attack or piracy attempt. The boat left the area without any damage or injuries to the crew.
Frequent security incidents
Reports and maritime data confirm that this incident is not isolated. It comes just one day after a similar security incident was detected and recorded in the maritime area north of Socotra Island. This raises concerns among international maritime security agencies about the resurgence of suspicious boat activity and the potential for piracy or armed groups attempting to exploit regional conflicts to threaten the safety of global supply lines and vital shipping lanes.
