New York, United States – Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, praised the competent authorities in the UAE. For its continued cooperation and providing the Agency with regular and timely technical information on nuclear facilities affected by attacks and their locations. Stressing that immediate communication with the agency’s accident and emergency center is crucial.
This came during Grossi’s briefing to members of the UN Security Council last night. Stressing that the agency will continue to provide public updates on the impact of the conflict on nuclear sites. And the health and environmental repercussions that may result from it, while continuing permanent consultation with the governments of the region.
Nuclear safety threat
The UN official told Council members that the attack on the Barakah nuclear power plant in the UAE threatened nuclear safety in the country. He stressed that radiation levels at the station are still within normal limits and that no injuries have been recorded.
He noted that the drone strike that occurred last Sunday morning was what caused a fire to break out in an electric generator located outside the station’s internal range.
Grossi warned that military activities targeting nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities pose undeniable risks. He called for the exercise of maximum restraint.
He revealed that since last year, the agency has been collecting information, analyzing and evaluating emergency preparedness and response capabilities. Pointing out that he will visit the Gulf region soon to continue this important joint work.
