Tehran, Iran – An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck the port of Laft in Hormozgan province, southern Iran, early Wednesday morning. The quake caused temporary alarm among residents in coastal areas. Simultaneously, monitoring and rescue teams were mobilized to assess the situation on the ground.
Statement from the Earthquake Monitoring and Depth Detection Center
The Iranian National Seismological Center stated in an official statement released early this morning that its seismic monitoring networks accurately recorded the earthquake. The statement indicated that “an earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck the port of Laft in Hormozgan province.” The center’s statement further explained that the epicenter was near the vital port and that the earthquake’s depth was approximately 20 kilometers below the surface. Therefore, residents of neighboring areas and surrounding villages clearly felt the tremor.
Local authorities confirm the safety of residents and facilities.
For their part, local authorities and crisis management teams in Hormozgan province moved quickly to reassure citizens. Initial reports from relief committees indicated that, as of the time of this report, the earthquake had not resulted in any significant loss of life or property damage.
Administrative sources in the province confirmed that technical assessment and rescue teams had already been deployed to the affected area and surrounding regions. This deployment was to finalize reports and ensure the safety of infrastructure.
Geography of Hormozgan and the risks of ongoing seismic activity
Hormozgan province and its ports on the Persian Gulf are areas that experience intermittent seismic activity. This is attributed to their geographical location near major geological fault lines.
Iranian authorities maintain a constant state of readiness in these areas to prepare for any potential aftershocks that may follow the main earthquake. Monitoring of any changes in the Earth’s crust is ongoing to ensure the safety of maritime navigation and economic activities in the port and surrounding coastal areas.
