Manila, Philippines – The Philippine Senate building was placed on high alert Wednesday after gunshots were heard inside. Authorities announced they were taking measures to protect senators.
This came amid reports of moves to arrest Senator and former police chief Ronald dela Rosa, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court.
Military deployment inside the Senate
Media reports and eyewitness accounts indicated that soldiers in camouflage uniforms were deployed inside the Senate building.
Some were armed with assault rifles. Police instructed those inside to take shelter.
Philippine Interior Secretary Jonvic Remola confirmed that there were no reports of casualties.
Fears of Dela Rosa’s arrest
The security escalation coincides with Ronald dela Rosa’s announcement on social media that his arrest is imminent.
He also called on his supporters to take action to prevent his extradition to the International Criminal Court.
Dela Rosa faces charges of crimes against humanity for his role in the anti-drug campaign launched by former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.
Human rights organizations accuse Philippine police of carrying out systematic killings
during the anti-drug campaign, which has resulted in thousands of deaths.
The police deny these accusations, maintaining that the victims were armed and resisted arrest during security operations.
