Moscow, Russia – Russia announced its intention to introduce the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile into military service by the end of this year. This comes as part of its plans to develop its nuclear deterrent capabilities and strengthen what is known as the Russian nuclear triad.
The Sarmat missile, which Western media have dubbed “Satan 2,” is one of Russia’s newest strategic missiles.
It is also distinguished by its ability to carry multiple nuclear warheads and follow complex trajectories to evade missile defense systems.
Strengthening nuclear capabilities
Moscow confirmed that the introduction of the new missile is part of a comprehensive program to modernize its strategic nuclear forces.
This comes amid escalating tensions with the West and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously emphasized that developing nuclear
deterrent systems is a strategic priority for maintaining the global balance of power.
Intercontinental ballistic missile
The Sarmat missile can carry more than ten nuclear warheads.
It also boasts intercontinental range and significant destructive power.
Furthermore, it possesses advanced systems for penetrating air and missile defenses.
Through this project, Russia aims to replace its aging Soviet-era Voevoda system, known in the West as Satan.
This is part of a broader plan to modernize Russia’s nuclear arsenal.
Development challenges
Despite the Russian announcement, previous reports have discussed technical challenges
and delays that the Sarmat program faced during its development and production phases.
This was particularly true given the pressures on the Russian military industry due to the war in Ukraine.
Moscow considers the introduction of the new missile into service
a significant step in strengthening its defensive and strategic capabilities in the coming period.
