Washington, D.C. – The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution directing President Donald Trump to halt unauthorized military actions against Iran, reflecting rising legislative pressure regarding the administration’s military campaign.

Narrow Vote Margin and Republican Defections

The resolution, introduced by Representative Pramila Jayapal, passed by a narrow margin of 214 to 208 votes. Four Republican lawmakers—Reps. Tom Barrett, Brian Fitzpatrick, Warren Davidson, and Thomas Massie—joined Democrats in supporting the measure, underscoring internal party tensions over executive war powers.

While the vote serves as a significant political signal, the measure remains largely symbolic and non-binding on the executive branch. The U.S. Senate is slated to vote on a similar war powers resolution later today to address executive military authority.

Escalating Regional Hostilities and Retaliatory Strikes

The legislative push comes amid a sharp intensification of military engagements between U.S. forces and Iran. President Trump recently pledged “severe military punishment” following attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea attributed to Iranian-backed Houthi forces.

In response, the U.S. military conducted fresh rounds of airstrikes against targets inside Iran, prompting Tehran to strike bases housing American personnel in neighboring countries following the breakdown of a temporary truce.

he House vote underscores growing congressional assertion over war powers authority, signaling bipartisan caution regarding prolonged military engagements in the Middle East despite the non-binding nature of the resolution.
