Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump said that Iranian officials informed him they would hand over to the US what he called “atomic dust,”
referring to nuclear materials or uranium residue associated with Iran’s nuclear program.
Trump added, during a press conference, that communication with the Iranian side is ongoing.
These contacts continue amidst US efforts to reach understandings regarding the nuclear issue and de-escalate tensions in the region.
Developments in the nuclear file
Trump’s remarks come amid escalating controversy over the fate of Iran’s enriched uranium,
following reports of close US monitoring of Iranian nuclear sites and facilities targeted in recent attacks.
Trump had previously stated that Washington “will not allow Iran to possess a nuclear weapon.”
He also emphasized that all options remain on the table for dealing with Tehran.
Indirect communications
In recent times, indirect contacts have taken place between the US and Iran through regional and international mediators
, in an attempt to reach understandings that include de-escalation and ensuring the security of navigation in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
These American statements coincide with diplomatic efforts led by several countries.
Among these countries are Pakistan and Qatar, which are working to advance de-escalation efforts
and prevent the expansion of the military confrontation in the region.
International anticipation
The international community is closely monitoring developments in the Iranian nuclear program,
amid concerns that the prospects for a new agreement to curb Iranian nuclear activities and reduce regional tensions may collapse.
Tehran, for its part, insists on its right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy
and rejects Western accusations that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
