Rome – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with the Prime Minister of the Libyan Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, in Rome to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. These talks come as Italy seeks to diversify its energy sources and secure stable supplies amidst escalating tensions in the Gulf region and their direct impact on global markets.
“Strategic Partnership”: Focus on Investment and Field Development
The Italian Prime Minister’s office confirmed that both leaders discussed developing existing economic and investment ties, with a particular focus on expanding cooperation in the oil and gas sectors. Both parties emphasized that the energy sector remains the cornerstone of their joint cooperation, necessitating continuous support for bilateral investments and opening new horizons in vital sectors to serve mutual interests.
Libya as a Secure Alternative Amid International Fluctuations
The significance of these talks highlights Italy’s challenges with rising global fuel prices resulting from military tensions between regional and international powers. Rome aims to reduce reliance on volatile regions by strengthening ties with Libya, a key energy supplier to Europe. This move represents a strategic shift toward securing alternative and stable sources, moving away from the fluctuations of oil and gas markets affected by ongoing geopolitical conflicts.
