Havana, Cuba – The Cuban Foreign Minister accused the United States of continuing to impose punitive policies directly targeting the Cuban people. He asserted that the US sanctions against his country represent “an attempt to strangle the Cuban economy and harm its citizens.”
The Cuban minister stated that the decades-long economic embargo has caused severe living crises, including shortages of food, medicine, and fuel. These crises have been accompanied by a decline in purchasing power and soaring inflation. He argued that Washington is using the sanctions as a tool of political pressure at the expense of the Cuban people.
He added that the Cuban government views these measures as transcending traditional political differences and representing a direct attack on the citizens’ right to a dignified life and development. He also indicated that his country would continue its diplomatic efforts to garner international support against the US sanctions.
Relations between Washington and Havana have been strained for years, despite brief periods of détente. In recent years, the United States has tightened economic, financial, and tourism restrictions on Cuba. This has had a direct impact on the island’s economic situation.
In contrast, the US administration maintains that the sanctions are intended to pressure the Cuban government on issues of democracy and human rights. Havana rejects these accusations, considering them interference in its internal affairs.
This political escalation comes at a time when Cuba is facing increasing economic challenges and a growing exodus of doctors, young people, and workers. There is also a decline in tourism revenue and difficulties with imports, further increasing the pressure on the Cuban government to manage living conditions and the economy.
