New York, USA – Qatar’s representative to the United Nations, Alya Al Thani, affirmed that opening the Strait of Hormuz is a shared international responsibility. She emphasized the importance of maintaining the free flow of navigation in this vital waterway.
Affirmation of freedom of international navigation
During a press conference held by ambassadors from several UN Security Council member states regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Alya Al Thani, emphasized the necessity of ensuring the strait remains open to unimpeded international maritime traffic. The strait is a vital artery for global trade.
She warned that any closure or disruption of the strait would lead to a widespread global crisis. She further stressed that this would have repercussions for international trade, markets, and energy security across the globe.
The importance of the strategic corridor
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints, through which a significant portion of oil supplies and essential commodities pass. This makes it a sensitive focal point for any regional tensions or security developments.
