  • Iron Grip on Stations: Price Hikes Allowed Only “Once a Day”

Berlin – The German government began implementing an emergency economic plan today, Friday, to cut energy taxes on gasoline and diesel. This swift official move aims to contain the skyrocketing prices triggered by Middle East tensions and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Obviously, Berlin has decided to intervene directly in the market to ensure its citizens’ purchasing power doesn’t collapse amidst the global energy crisis raging in May 2026.

“17 Cents Per Liter”: Immediate Price Drop and Close Monitoring of Oil Firms

Under the new law, gas stations witnessed a noticeable decline; “Super E10” and diesel prices dropped by an average of 10.5 cents, bringing the total reduction to approximately 17 cents per liter after VAT. Accordingly, Economy Minister Katharina Reiche issued a stern warning to oil companies to pass this cut entirely to consumers without skimming profits, emphasizing that regulatory bodies will monitor price movements around the clock to ensure transparent execution.

Iron Grip on Stations: Price Hikes Allowed Only “Once a Day”

The government didn’t stop at tax cuts; it imposed “strict” regulatory rules to prevent daily price manipulation. Gas stations are prohibited from raising prices more than once a day (at 12:00 PM), while they are allowed to lower them at any time to encourage competition. As a result, violators face hefty fines of up to €100,000. Amidst this government mobilization, observers believe Germany is setting an example of managing energy crises by balancing financial support with rigorous legal oversight to shield its citizens from “Hormuz fluctuations.”
