A new maritime incident off the coast of Mukalla, Yemen, amid strong European warnings

The British Maritime Safety Authority (MSA) explained in a brief statement that a cargo ship operating in the area reported a suspicious approach by a small boat and a fishing vessel, which alarmed its crew.

The MSA did not provide further details about the nature of the incident or whether there was any direct contact or damage to the ship. It indicated that investigations are underway to determine the consequences of the incident and to ensure the safety of the targeted commercial vessel.

This incident comes amid escalating regional tensions in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. The European Union’s maritime mission in the Gulf of Aden, SPEEDS, renewed its strong warnings to commercial vessels at the end of March, urging them to stay away from Yemeni territorial waters.

This warning followed the Houthi group’s announcement of its continued support for operations linked to the Iranian axis. As a result, maritime threats have intensified.

The European mission noted in its statement that the risk level in the region is currently classified as “moderate.” However, it explicitly advised all vessels, even those not affiliated with the United States or Israel, to take alternative routes. It also urged them to stay away from Yemeni waters to avoid any potential attacks or seizures.

Maritime security experts believe that the continued incidents of suspicious approaches off the coasts of Mukalla and Hodeidah reflect the serious challenges facing global shipping. Yemen’s waterways have become an arena for geopolitical conflicts. This places additional pressure on marine insurance companies and increases the costs of transiting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Gulf of Aden.
