Tel Aviv, Israel – In a dramatic development that threatens to unravel the existing understandings on the ground, the Israeli army issued an urgent warning today to residents of more than a dozen villages and towns in southern Lebanon, demanding their immediate evacuation and movement north. This decision came amid direct Israeli accusations against Hezbollah of violating the ceasefire agreements. It also prompted the Israeli military establishment to announce its intention to launch an operational operation in the area.
Adraee warns: “Danger surrounds anyone who approaches the party’s facilities.”
The Israeli army spokesman in Arabic, Avichai Adraee, published a statement via the “X” platform (formerly Twitter), in which he made a direct appeal to the local residents, saying: “The Israeli army does not intend to harm you, and out of concern for your safety, it asks you to evacuate your homes immediately and move away from the specified area towards the Sidon area.”
In his warning, Adraee emphasized that being near Hezbollah operatives, their military installations, or their weapons poses a real and direct threat to civilian lives. He added that the Israeli action is a necessary response to what he described as Hezbollah’s violation of the ceasefire. This compels Israeli forces to operate in those areas to secure its northern border.
Fears of a new wave of displacement
These evacuation orders have sparked panic in the targeted villages and towns. Families have begun packing their belongings to head towards Sidon and safer areas in the north. Observers believe this warning could be a prelude to a limited military operation or intensive airstrikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure believed to have recently been reactivated.
As tensions escalate, attention is turning to the international community and the ability of mediators to contain the situation and prevent the Lebanese front from sliding into a full-blown confrontation. While Israel asserts that it will not remain silent in the face of any actions that threaten the security of its northern residents, it maintains that “the ball is now in Hezbollah’s court” to avert a new humanitarian and military catastrophe in southern Lebanon.
