Abu Dhabi, UAE – Dr. Anwar Gargash, diplomatic advisor to the President of the UAE, confirmed during a session to re-evaluate alliances in a time of tension. Held as part of the Gulf Influencers Forum, the ferocity of the Iranian aggression exceeded expectations.
He explained that all Gulf states worked to avoid war and there was an implicit agreement not to use Gulf lands against Iran. But the Iranian aggression against its neighbors was planned, not a scenario and a momentary reaction.
Sahib’s diplomatic advisor to the UAE President added: “Today we are facing a review after the failure of the containment policy with the Iranian side”.
Absence of the Arab League
He pointed out that the cooperating countries supported each other logistically, but from a political and military standpoint, cooperation was weak. He added, “In fact, I was not surprised by the weakness of the Arab League, but what surprised me was the position of the Gulf states, and the Gulf narrative must emerge from the shy and courteous narrative and must be realistic”.
He added: “The region has been searching for a solution for 20 years and knows that wars have repercussions. We want a political solution that addresses the interests of all countries.”
He continued: “Iran acts as a superpower without a nuclear weapon, so what would the situation be like if it possessed a nuclear weapon”. The issue cannot be addressed with statements, and we are facing a crisis of trust that will extend for decades to come. Relationships will return, but trust takes a long time. Adding that reviewing the situation with the Iranian side would be rational and not emotional. The review will take into account that the situation after the brutal aggression will not be the same as before.
Gargash concluded: “There are lessons to be learned from the current crisis: first, self-reliance, and second, restoring Gulf unity and solidarity”. Thirdly, it is necessary that we reconsider our calculations and not allow anyone from outside the Gulf to read to us the independence of our region.
