Oklahoma, USA – A series of violent tornadoes swept through northern Oklahoma on Thursday, injuring at least 10 people and causing widespread property damage. The tornadoes directly impacted Vance Air Force Base in Enyde. Emergency and rescue teams were mobilized.
Damage at Vance Air Force Base
Vance Air Force Base confirmed in an official statement on Facebook that the military installation was directly hit by the hurricane. The base also stated that it immediately conducted a safety survey to ensure the well-being of all personnel, confirming that by 7:30 a.m., all personnel on the base had been identified and no injuries had been reported.
The command is currently conducting a comprehensive assessment of the facility to determine the extent of the damage and ensure the safety of critical infrastructure and facilities. As a relief measure, the base announced the opening of its fitness center to accommodate affected personnel in need of assistance. It also provided childcare for essential personnel involved in emergency response operations. The command further emphasized its close coordination with local officials.
Emergency response and civilian casualties
On the civilian front, ABC affiliate KOCO NEWS reported that emergency teams are continuing search and rescue operations in the affected areas.
Reports quoted the Garfield emergency manager as saying that at least 10 injuries were reported, all described as minor. Furthermore, teams are still assessing the situation on the ground.
For his part, Enyde Mayor David Mason stated that police and fire crews were working at full capacity to coordinate the response efforts. He also urged residents to stay away from the Grayridge area, which bore the brunt of the damage, in order to ensure clear access for ambulances and rescue vehicles.
Despite the extensive damage the hurricane caused to infrastructure, officials stressed that ensuring the safety of civilians and military families remains the top priority, given the forecast of continued unstable weather.
