Cairo, Egypt – The Egyptian government categorically denied reports circulating about allowing food shipments containing radioactive levels into the country. It described these reports as unsubstantiated claims intended to sow confusion. The Cabinet’s Media Center, in an official statement issued Wednesday, affirmed that the export and import control system is operating with the utmost vigilance. It also noted that all food products entering the local market are subject to strict oversight by the National Food Safety Authority. This is done to ensure their compliance with precise international standards.
Integrated scientific control system
The National Food Safety Authority clarified that all imports pass through an integrated monitoring system based on precise scientific mechanisms. These mechanisms include periodic radiation measurement. The Authority indicated that it follows the internationally recognized “risk assessment” system. This system involves strict monitoring and the application of 100% inspection and testing procedures to all shipments arriving from countries or geographically classified as having a high radiation risk. This is done in direct coordination and technical cooperation with the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority.
Banning the entry of non-compliant shipments
Egyptian authorities have emphasized that they will not allow the entry of any food shipment proven to be contaminated with radioactive pollutants, even if the levels are within permissible limits in other countries. The authorities confirmed that the legal procedures followed in this regard are immediate and decisive. The entire shipment is rejected, and the supplier is forced to re-export it directly from the port of arrival. This is done without allowing its unloading or distribution in local markets, in order to protect public health.
Commitment to transparency and consumer protection
The authority reiterated its commitment to prohibiting any levels of radiation in incoming shipments. It also affirmed its continued dedication to its regulatory role with utmost firmness and transparency. The government urged citizens not to be swayed by rumors and to obtain information from official sources. It emphasized that the state prioritizes public health and food safety and is committed to implementing the latest standards and specifications to ensure the quality of all imported food products.
