Damascus, Syria – In a historic event marking a radical shift in the region’s military and political landscape, US forces completely evacuated the Qasrak base in northwestern Hasakah province, Syria, on Thursday morning. This marks the final moments of the US military presence on Syrian soil.
Official handover and transfer of sovereignty
Field sources reported that the evacuation was carried out with meticulous logistical arrangements. The departing forces officially handed over the base to the 60th Division of the Syrian Army.
The Qasrak base was the largest and last remaining strategic stronghold of the US-led international coalition forces in the country. With this move, the Syrian Arab Republic is now completely free of any US military presence for the first time in many years.
culmination of the gradual withdrawal process
This final withdrawal comes as part of a timetable that began in February 2026. US forces initiated a gradual and comprehensive withdrawal from their various bases, including the strategic al-Tanf base in the border triangle. The withdrawal also included the al-Shaddadi base in the Hasakah countryside. Reports in March confirmed the commencement of dismantling equipment and transferring technical devices and military vehicles belonging to the coalition towards Iraqi Kurdistan. The process was scheduled to be completed and the military files closed permanently by mid-April, a deadline that has now been met with today’s withdrawal.
Prospects for the next stage
Observers view the evacuation of the Qasrak base and its handover to the Syrian army as a victory for the political process aimed at restoring state sovereignty over all its territory. It also marks the end of an era of direct tensions between international powers over Syrian territory. With the 60th Division taking control of the site, a new phase of Syrian security and military redeployment begins in the northwestern Hasakah region. This comes amidst regional and international anticipation regarding how this strategic vacuum will be filled and how stability will be ensured in the border areas given the current turbulent circumstances in the Middle East.
