Washington, USA – According to Axios, citing US officials, US envoy Steve Wittkopf asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to de-escalate military strikes in Lebanon. In addition, he asked Netanyahu to work to open a negotiating track to contain the rapidly escalating situation in the region.
US pressure to de-escalate
According to Axios sources, this move comes as part of the US administration’s efforts to prevent an escalation of the conflict. This is particularly relevant given the regional tensions related to the war with Iran and its repercussions on several fronts.
Officials confirmed that Washington is seeking an immediate de-escalation of military operations. This would help pave the way for political and diplomatic solutions.
Fears of the conflict widening
Sources told Axios that the US administration is increasingly concerned about the potential for the situation in Lebanon to escalate into a wider confrontation involving other regional actors. This could threaten security and stability in the Middle East.
They added that continued military strikes could undermine international efforts to solidify a ceasefire. These efforts are between the United States and Iran.
Moves to open channels of negotiation
Sources at Axios explained that the US request also includes encouraging the Israeli side to engage in indirect negotiations. The aim is to contain the crisis and prevent further escalation.
This comes at a time of increasing international pressure to revive the diplomatic track. There are warnings of serious repercussions for regional security and global supply chains from any new escalation.
