South Lebanon, Lebanon – The Israeli army announced a new plan to establish a “security zone” in southern Lebanon, a move reflecting a dangerous escalation in the ongoing confrontations along the border. This step raises concerns that limited military operations could become a long-term reality on the ground.
According to the Israeli military command, the plan aims to remove security threats from northern settlements by establishing a security strip inside Lebanese territory. This strip will be militarily secured to prevent the infiltration of armed elements or the firing of rockets into Israel.
Details of the plan indicate the army’s intention to conduct extensive search operations and intensify air and artillery strikes. Additional forces will also be deployed along the border to ensure partial control of the area within Lebanese territory. This recalls the “border strip” that existed for years before Israel’s withdrawal in 2000.
In contrast, these moves were met with widespread Lebanese rejection, with officials considering any Israeli military presence inside Lebanese territory a blatant violation of sovereignty. The officials emphasized that a response would be inevitable should this plan be implemented.
Observers believe this step has both political and military dimensions, as Israel seeks to redraw the rules of engagement and impose a new security reality on the border. This comes amidst escalating regional tensions and a widening confrontation in the region.
Analysts have also warned that establishing a security zone could intensify clashes and open a protracted war of attrition. This risk is heightened by the complexity of the regional landscape and the overlapping international and regional interests in Lebanon.
The coming hours will be crucial in determining whether this plan will become a reality on the ground or merely a pressure tactic within a broader conflict that extends beyond the borders of southern Lebanon.
