Peshawar, Pakistan – Five people were injured in a mortar attack targeting a residential area in northwestern Pakistan. The incident has reignited tensions along the border with Afghanistan. Official sources have accused the Afghan Taliban of being behind the attack.
Pakistani security sources reported that the mortars landed in a tribal area near the border, injuring five civilians, including a woman and a child. They were taken to a local hospital for treatment, and two of them were reported to be in moderate condition.
Authorities stated that the attack occurred late at night, with a series of explosions causing panic among residents. Security forces were subsequently deployed to the area and launched a large-scale search operation for the perpetrators.
mutual accusations
This incident comes amid escalating tensions between Islamabad and Kabul in recent months, fueled by mutual accusations of harboring armed groups and carrying out cross-border attacks. Afghan authorities have repeatedly denied these accusations.
Military sources confirmed that Pakistan reserves the right to respond to any attack that threatens its national security. The sources indicated that investigations are underway to definitively determine the circumstances of the attack and the party responsible.
Observers believe that the continuation of such attacks reflects the fragile security situation in the border regions. It also places additional pressure on security coordination between the two countries, at a time when Islamabad is striving to contain the tension and prevent the situation from escalating into a wider confrontation.
