HANOI, Vietnam – At least seven people were killed and others injured on Saturday when a bus carrying a charity group overturned on a rugged mountain road in Yen Bai province in northern Vietnam.

Details of the incident

According to the official Vietnamese news agency, the bus (with a capacity of 29 seats) was carrying 19 people when the driver lost control while crossing a dangerous mountain slope, causing it to overturn and be completely destroyed.

rescue efforts

Hoang Anh Tuan, the mayor of Vinh Ho, told local media that rescue teams have managed to pull 10 survivors from the wreckage so far.

Rescue operations continued for hours to try and free those trapped inside the bus, with heavy equipment being used to cut through the vehicle’s metal frame.

Authorities mobilized police and military units, as well as local officials and residents, to participate in the relief efforts.

Possible cause

Initial reports from local authorities indicate that the accident was likely caused by a brake malfunction while the bus was traveling downhill. Security services have launched an official investigation to determine the precise and definitive cause of the incident.
