Kyiv, Ukraine – The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, is facing a major crisis after Russian forces launched an attack on the main power grid. This has led to widespread power outages and left about a third of the city without heating, amid a severe cold snap that is compounding the suffering of residents.

Ukrainian authorities confirmed that emergency teams are working around the clock to repair the damage and restore power to affected stations. However, they warned that a full restoration of service could take a long time due to the extent of the infrastructure damage. They noted that the outage directly impacted hospitals, schools, and other vital facilities. As a result, the government activated emergency plans to ensure the basic needs of its citizens are met.

Local officials said the attack also partially paralyzed transportation. This led to severe traffic congestion in the capital and disrupted the daily commutes of workers and students. They explained that some areas of Kyiv had begun distributing generators and fuel depots to temporarily alleviate the crisis.

The Russian attack is part of a series of repeated strikes targeting vital infrastructure in Ukraine. According to military experts, these attacks aim to increase pressure on the government and raise the cost of the conflict. They added that the continuation of these attacks exacerbates the humanitarian and economic risks, especially with the approach of winter and the increased need for energy and heating.

In a related context, analysts warned that escalating attacks on power grids could destabilize society and increase the likelihood of internal displacement from the most affected areas. They therefore stressed the urgent need for international support to alleviate the crisis.
