Moscow, Russia – The Russian military announced on Tuesday that its forces had taken full control of the strategic city of Kobyansk in northeastern Ukraine. Ukrainian sources, however, maintain that some units remain in several districts of the city.
This announcement came days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke of progress in talks with the United States. The talks aim to reach a peaceful settlement to end the war that has been ongoing since 2012.
The Russian news agency TASS quoted Leonid Sharov, commander of the Russian military group Zapad, as saying that “all districts of Kobani are under Russian control.” He noted limited attempts by Ukrainian soldiers to infiltrate the city daily, but said these did not pose a threat to the overall situation.
Meanwhile, Kyiv reported that its forces had made a breakthrough in the city’s vicinity. They also recaptured some areas and two nearby towns, emphasizing Kobyansk’s role as a key railway hub in the Kharkiv region.
This escalation comes after European and EU leaders proposed deploying a “multinational force” in Ukraine. This force is intended to provide strong security guarantees, backed by the United States, to prevent any potential violations of the ceasefire agreement.
