Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan begins an official visit to the United States today. During his visit, he will discuss a number of regional and international issues of mutual interest with senior officials in the administration of US President Donald Trump.
The visit includes meetings between Fidan and his American counterpart, Antony Blinken, as well as meetings with senior White House officials. Middle East issues and bilateral relations are expected to top the agenda.
A statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry explained that the visit comes within the framework of the “ongoing strategic dialogue” between Ankara and Washington. It aims to strengthen cooperation in defense and economic fields. Discussions will also cover energy security issues and coordination on matters related to Syria, Iraq, and the Black Sea.
Observers believe the visit presents an opportunity to reset relations between the two countries, especially after periods of tension surrounding the arming of the Kurds in Syria and the F-16 fighter jet deal. They assert that direct dialogue between Fidan and the Trump administration could pave the way for a new phase of Turkish-American cooperation.
