Caribbean Islands – Hurricane Melissa caused widespread devastation after sweeping through the Caribbean with tremendous force. It left behind tragic scenes and tears that have yet to dry.
According to UN reports, more than 700,000 children were directly affected by the cyclone that struck the islands of the region. Wind speeds reached over 180 kilometers per hour, causing homes to collapse and displacing thousands of families. Power and water services were also cut off across vast areas.
Local authorities have declared a state of emergency, and rescue teams and humanitarian organizations have rushed to provide urgent assistance. There are warnings that the crisis could worsen due to flooding and landslides.
Forecasts indicate that the severe weather will continue in the coming days. This raises concerns about an increase in the number of those affected and a rise in the toll of human and material losses.
