Bannu, Pakistan – Seven people were killed and three others injured on Saturday in twin explosions targeting civilian vehicles in the mountainous Marka Pira area of Bannu, in northwestern Pakistan. District police chief Yasir Afridi confirmed that the attack was carried out using remotely detonated improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Afridi described the attack as a “cowardly act of terrorism.”
The sequence of the tragic attack
The attack began with a Datsun pickup truck carrying passengers toward the Domel area, killing five people and completely destroying the vehicle. In a striking development demonstrating the meticulous planning of the attack, a second explosion occurred shortly afterward, just one kilometer from the first site. This second explosion targeted a vehicle transporting the wounded and survivors of the first blast to the hospital, killing two more people.
Rescue teams rushed the victims to the Domel Health Center and Khalifa Gul Nawaz Hospital. Meanwhile, security forces cordoned off the area and launched a comprehensive search operation for any other explosive devices.
Official condemnations: Confronting violence
Official condemnations of the attack poured in. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his deep sorrow, warning domestic and foreign supporters of the terrorists that they would not escape the consequences. The president affirmed that these attempts to undermine Pakistan’s diplomatic successes and peace efforts would not succeed. He also stressed that the country was determined to eradicate terrorism.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also strongly condemned the attack, wishing the injured a speedy recovery. Similarly, Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq denounced the attack, emphasizing that the Pakistani people stand united against such malicious plots.
Banu: Security challenges continue to escalate
This attack has once again highlighted the deteriorating security situation in the mountainous areas of Bannu, which have recently witnessed a series of attacks targeting civilians and security forces. Just a week ago, militants attempted to blow up the Teri Ram Bridge. Targeted killings of police officers have also been reported this June.
These recurring incidents are causing deep concern among local residents, especially after violent clashes last month that resulted in the deaths of 25 terrorists and several police and civilian martyrs. This situation presents increasing security challenges for Pakistani authorities in securing these remote areas.
