In a literary scene that reflects the depth and strength of Egyptian culture, the General Organization for the Cultural Village “Katara” has announced the longlist for the 12th edition of the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel, revealing a remarkable Egyptian presence of 26 writers and researchers. This significant participation reinforces Egypt’s position as a vital hub for narrative and critical creativity in the Arab world, confirming the continuous flow of Egyptian writers enriching the cultural scene.

Record Numbers and Global Competition

This edition witnessed unprecedented turnout in the history of the award since its launch in 2014, with organizers recording 2,610 submissions from across the Arab world. These entries underwent rigorous screening by judging panels, which concluded by selecting 18 works in each of the award’s five categories in preparation for the next stage of literary competition.

Details of Diverse Egyptian Participation

Egyptian submissions were distributed skillfully across various award branches. Egyptian creatives led the scene with 8 works in the published novels category, followed by 7 creatives in the historical novels category, 4 in unpublished novels, 4 in young adult novels, and 3 studies in the critical studies category. This quantitative and qualitative distribution of Egyptian entries reflects the diversity of literary spectrums represented by Egyptian writers and researchers in this edition.

The Map of Arab Creativity and Upcoming Stages

Excellence was not limited to Egypt alone; the lists revealed a wide geographic diversity reflecting the richness of Arab literature. Morocco excelled at the forefront of the critical studies category, while Algeria imposed a strong presence in the young adult novels category. Meanwhile, other categories witnessed fair competition among creatives from Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Sudan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Oman, and others.

The organization explained that the order of names within the lists was alphabetical, confirming that the coming stage will witness the announcement of the shortlists, preceding the reveal of the winners during the Katara Arabic Novel Festival events. This award continues to solidify its position as a beacon for Arab literature, supporting all creatives who seek to bring their voices to the world through the gateway of narrative and critical creativity.
