The film The Rip, starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, has entered a new legal crisis after several police officers filed a lawsuit against the filmmakers, accusing the film of distorting their image and presenting inaccurate accounts inspired by real events.

A famous incident in Miami Lakes

The details of the crisis stem from the film’s reliance on a real security operation that took place in 2016 in the Miami Lakes area, where US police carried out a massive raid related to drug trafficking. The operation resulted in the seizure of more than $24 million in cash, in one of the most prominent cases that sparked widespread controversy within the United States at the time.

Accusations of defaming police officers

According to the lawsuit, several officers involved in the original operation asserted that the film presented a “misleading” picture of events. They indicated that the script portrayed certain security personnel as being involved in corruption and collaborating with criminal elements, which they considered a direct attack on their professional and personal reputations. Investigator Jonathan Santana, who led the actual operation, explained that the film’s release altered public perception of him. He confirmed that he was subjected to sarcastic comments and accusations of stealing seized funds, despite his crucial role in the success of the security mission at the time.

“Fabricated” scenes fuel the crisis

The lawsuit also included direct accusations against the filmmakers of adding “fabricated” scenes and events that bore no relation to reality, as some police officers appeared in the film discussing seizing confiscated funds for themselves, which the officers’ lawyers described as a deliberate distortion that caused psychological and professional harm to their clients.

The film’s stars and the ongoing controversy

The film is considered one of the most anticipated thrillers of the coming period, especially since it comes from Artists Equity, the company founded by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as part of their ongoing artistic partnership. The film also stars Tiana Taylor, Sacha Barley, Scott Adkins, and Steven Yeun, and continues to generate controversy due to its reliance on highly sensitive real-life events.
