Guizhou, China – The world’s longest bridge opened to traffic on Sunday morning in southwest China’s Guizhou Province.

This reduced the travel time through a deep valley from two hours to just two minutes after 3 years of construction.

AFP

The Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that the Huajiang Valley Grand Bridge rises 625 meters above the Beiban River in the mountainous terrain of Guizhou Province.

It is about 9 times longer than the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

According to Guizhou provincial authorities, the project, with a main span of 1,420 meters, has become the longest long-span steel gabled suspension bridge in mountainous terrain in the world.

The 2,890-metre-long structure extends over the large Huajiang Valley, called the “Earth Slit”.

It is the latest addition to the rapidly expanding infrastructure network of the world’s second-largest economy.

Over the years, Guizhou, one of China’s least developed provinces, has built more than 30,000 bridges in its mountainous terrain, including three of the longest bridges in the world.
