New York, USA – Health investigations are accelerating in New York City to contain an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in neighborhoods on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The city’s health department, according to the New York Post, has announced that the number of confirmed cases has risen to 14, a sevenfold increase since last Thursday.

Urgent health warnings

The areas targeted by the warning include the neighborhoods of Carnegie Hill and Yorkville, specifically the postal codes 10028, 10128, and 10075. Health authorities urged anyone who has lived, worked, or visited these areas since late June to closely monitor their symptoms.

Dr. Alastair Martin, New York City’s health commissioner, emphasized the seriousness of the disease in an official statement. He also stressed its treatability if detected early. “Legitimate Disease is a potentially fatal illness, but it responds effectively to antibiotics when diagnosed early,” he said. He offered particular advice to high-risk groups—those over 50, smokers, and those with chronic lung disease—urging them to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.

Search for contaminated “cooling tower”

Initial investigations by the health department indicate that the likely source of the illness-causing bacteria (Leygonella) is one of the cooling towers located on the rooftops of buildings in the area. Technical teams are currently conducting a comprehensive survey and collecting samples. All cooling towers in the affected neighborhoods are also being tested to identify the contaminated tower that is spraying the bacteria-laden aerosol into the air.

Despite the heightened state of alert, the health department confirmed that the overall risk level remains low. It indicated that daily activities such as using water for bathing or cooking, and even running air conditioners indoors, remain completely safe for residents. This is particularly evident given the city’s recovery from the recent heatwave.

Lessons from the past

This crisis comes at a time when memories of last summer’s outbreak in Harlem are still fresh. That outbreak saw 114 infections and seven deaths, amid legal and ethical controversy surrounding the accuracy of the official death toll. In response to those events, the city council passed a law requiring building owners to conduct monthly Legionella testing during the warmer months. This measure is now being relied upon to expedite the response and limit the spread of this new outbreak.
