Abu Dhabi, UAE – Anwar Gargash, diplomatic advisor to the UAE president, affirmed that his country does not seek hostility with Iran, but lacks confidence in the current regime.
He also stressed the necessity of reaching comprehensive settlements that guarantee regional stability.
In remarks to foreign journalists, Gargash explained that the UAE aspires to end the existing conflict,
but without accepting temporary solutions that fail to address the core issues.
These issues, he noted, could exacerbate the situation in the future.
Iran’s cautious stance
Gargash pointed out that the Iranian regime is “fighting for itself, not for the state,”
arguing that no normal regime could accept the level of destruction currently being witnessed.
He added that the lack of trust is a major obstacle to any genuine rapprochement,
despite the UAE’s insistence that it does not want escalation.
He stressed that the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is a top priority for the global economy.
He affirmed that the UAE would join any international effort led by the United States to secure it.
However, he clarified that the UAE is not seeking to act as an independent naval power.
He explained that the Strait cannot be held hostage by any single country and must be a fundamental part of any future agreement.
A call for a comprehensive and balanced agreement
Gargash stressed that any agreement with Iran must not be limited to a cessation of military operations,
but must also include a halt to what he described as Iranian hostile activities in the region.
The issue of compensation for affected countries must also be addressed.
He emphasized that the end of the conflict must not lead to a state of continued instability.
He concluded by affirming that the United States remains the UAE primary security partner,
noting that current Iranian policies may lead to a strengthened US presence in the Gulf in the coming period.
This comes amidst ongoing regional tensions.
