Rome, Italy – Two vessels off the Italian coast rescued 32 migrants on Sunday and recovered two bodies from a boat. The boat was attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Libya to Europe during the Easter holiday.

Media reports, citing survivors, said the boat was carrying 105 people. They also noted that 71 migrants remain missing at sea. This raises fears that the death toll could rise in one of the dangerous migration incidents across the Mediterranean Sea.

Journey Details and Number of Passengers

Survivors explained that the boat departed from the Libyan coast in an attempt to reach Europe as part of ongoing irregular migration journeys. However, they noted that the trip faced difficult conditions. This led to partial sinking and the loss of a large number of passengers.

Rescue Efforts Ongoing

Rescue teams continue search operations in the area, amid expectations of finding more victims. This is given the scale of the incident and challenging sea conditions. Authorities confirmed that search efforts are still underway to determine the fate of the missing.

Recurrent Mediterranean Migration Tragedies

This incident is part of a series of humanitarian disasters linked to irregular migration attempts across the Mediterranean Sea. The area frequently witnesses shipwrecks due to fragile boats and severe overcrowding. Consequently, this leads to significant human losses.

These incidents renew international calls to intensify efforts to address the root causes of irregular migration, enhance rescue operations, and provide safe pathways for migrants. This aims to reduce the recurrence of such incidents.
