  • Background to the crisis

Abu Dhabi, UAE – His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, welcomed the statements of his American counterpart Marco Rubio regarding Sudan.

Rubio stressed that Washington’s immediate goal is to halt hostilities as the new year begins;

This ensures that humanitarian organizations can deliver vital aid to various parts of the country suffering from the effects of the conflict.

Humanitarian priorities and a civil political path

In this context, the Emirati minister appreciated Rubio’s emphasis on the importance of advancing the path of de-escalation.

He stressed that an immediate ceasefire and ensuring safe humanitarian access are a “top priority”.

Accordingly, His Highness considered that these steps were not only aimed at protecting civilians,

It also paves the way for a political path leading to an independent civilian transition.

It fulfills the aspirations of the brotherly Sudanese people for security and peace.

Sudan interest

Furthermore, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed reaffirmed the UAE’s firm commitment to working within the US-led Quartet.

He noted that reaching an immediate ceasefire would bolster international efforts to reach a sustainable political solution.

He places the interests of Sudan and the Sudanese people above all else.

This will contribute to ending the escalating suffering caused by the war.

An expected American move

On the other hand, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had called on countries to use their influence to bring peace to Sudan.

He considered the new year a favorable opportunity for a comprehensive humanitarian truce.

This comes in conjunction with statements made by US President Donald Trump last week,

In which he pledged to intervene directly to stop the raging war, which gives new impetus to international diplomatic efforts.

Background to the crisis

It is worth noting that Sudan has been witnessing bloody clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since mid-April 2023;

The war resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of approximately 13 million people.

Therefore, these international moves come at a critical time when millions are suffering from widespread famine and lack of healthcare.

This makes stopping the fighting an absolute necessity that cannot be postponed.
