Tartous, Syria – DP World Group has achieved a significant milestone as part of its strategic project to modernize Tartous Port. This is due to the arrival of the first of three new mobile cranes.
Receiving this crane represents the first major investment under the concession agreement concluded between DB World and the Syrian government for a period of 30 years. Which was signed last year, marking the beginning of a long-term program aimed at transforming the port into a more efficient, modern, and competitive gateway for regional trade.
Port modernization
Fahd Al-Banna, CEO of DB World Tartous, stressed that the arrival of the first mobile crane represents an important step in the process of modernizing the port of Tartous. Considering it the first stage in a series of investments that will enhance the port’s capacity and levels of efficiency and reliability.
He explained that this step will enable the group to serve its clients and support the growing trade requirements in Syria. Pointing out that by investing in advanced infrastructure, modern technologies and qualifying working cadres, work will be done to build a modern portal that contributes to strengthening supply chains. Attracting new trade opportunities and actively contributing to Syria’s long-term economic recovery.
capacity
The first crane arrived on June 29, while the two additional cranes are expected to arrive next August. Each crane has a capacity of approximately two million tons of cargo annually, significantly increasing the port’s cargo handling capacity.
With the actual start of operation of the three cranes, it is expected that the port’s cargo handling capacity will increase by 40%. This will enable the port to receive larger ships, reduce waiting time, and handle larger volumes of containers and bulk shipments. These improvements will also contribute to strengthening Syria’s import and export capabilities. Supporting growing trade volumes through enhanced absorptive capacity, flexibility and efficiency.
The new cranes form an essential part of a comprehensive investment program for DP World Group worth a total of US$800 million. This program includes upgrading infrastructure, providing modern shipment handling equipment, and digitizing operations. Introducing operational improvements aimed at supporting Syrian trade and the economic recovery process, in addition to consolidating the port’s position as a competitive gateway for trade at the regional and international levels.
staff development
In addition to starting to use the new equipment, the program includes intensive training courses to develop the skills of local employees. This supports their technical capabilities, lays the foundations for operational excellence, and generates sustainable employment opportunities.
The port of Tartous is of strategic importance thanks to its vital location on the Mediterranean coast. It represents a major gateway linking southern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. This enables it to play a pivotal role in facilitating regional trade and supporting Syria’s economic recovery.
