  • A call for accountability and enhanced oversight

Abu Dhabi, UAE – The UAE welcomed the decision of the International Maritime Organization’s Legal Committee, which condemned Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The decision also condemned Iran’s threats and attacks on ships in the region.

International affirmation of freedom of navigation

The committee affirmed, according to the resolution issued, that Iran’s practices violate the right

of innocent passage through the Strait, a guaranteed right that cannot be obstructed.

It also called on Tehran to cease its attacks and abide by international law.

Furthermore, it urged the guarantee of unimpeded freedom of navigation for all vessels.

Condemnation of threats and sea mines

The committee, according to the resolution, condemned the threats associated with the laying of mines in

and around the Strait of Hormuz. It also condemned the imposition of fees on transiting vessels.

It considered these actions to be a serious threat to international navigation,

the safety of seafarers, and the marine environment.

A call for accountability and enhanced oversight

The committee called on the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization

to monitor the impact of these practices on global shipping and trade.

This would contribute to holding Iran accountable for any violations.

The committee stressed the need to refrain from any actions that impede international maritime transport.
